SWING BLOG by BAD_MISTER
As he stated, The Bad 1 and I go way back. Most of you all are only familiar with his "Tech Support" here on Motifator. I am here to tell you he is MUCH more than the Senior Technician for Yamaha. He can PLAY!!!....I mean HE CAN PLAY!!! He had a Jazz band back in High School and a "Fusion" band in the 70s and was experimenting with the evolving technological potential in music back then (Herbie Hancock might have had more access to gear, but had nothing on Phil as to the curiosity and stepping out onto the uncharted waters and making it happen between the two).
I say all of this because,Bad_Mister's contributions here on this site are the culmination of practical music skills and technology and how the two can co-exist without compromising the Human Elements of creation and execution. We have benefited by his "Step by Step" explanations as to "HOW" from the Technology view. This background from the Practical view should be of help in understanding "To Quantize or Not to Quantize" with the Human considerations. Making the music "SWING" is a Human thing that all the technology in the world will always have a difficulty managing because it "is" a human thing.
He mentions Bernard Edwards,a disciple of James Jamerson, probably the most innovative Bass Player in the last 50 years. Go back and listen to their recordings for what he discribes in this blog. Listen for the emphesis and lack of through the tunes. James, though known for his Motown work was a Jazz Bassist and in the early tunes actually played an upright bass. He still managed to "swing" even playing R&B. Listen to Bernard and his work with Chic. If you are fortunate enough to access albums, listen to the album cuts as well as the known hits. You will hear how he makes the music "dance" (which is what "swinging" does.
Thelonious Monk used to say, "It's not the notes you play. It's the notes you leave out". Than and the velocity in the "when and where" you play the notes is where the "Swing" is.....and that's human.
I don't know abut anyone else, but The Bad 1 has given me a lot to think about next time I sit at the workstation to create.
TBxR,Phil....STILL!!!
