The difference in typical soft synth and hardware synth

is in a sound design.

Software synths running on monster machines like the current PC computers don't make need of good sound design to disappear. It's something I consider the most valuable thing in a hardware workstation. From presets, arps to variety and quality of effect section - impressive technical specs of an usual softsynth aren't enough. It's easy to see the difference when comparing Korg's Legacy Collection to some other VSTs. KLC is a complete tool including a full effect section, a combi mode and it sounds fabulous.

There is also thing about ability to sustain a polyphony in softsynths. It's not unusual to have a massive increase in CPU consumption when more modulations and functions are used. I suppose it's a matter of "just upgrade your PC" philosophy when with a dedicated hardware there no surprises performance wise. Fortunately there are some developers who are considering efficiency as a very important issue.
