Hello: You may have found my latest blog entry here via the link in the listening room. Or, if you are just reading this and would like to know what song I am referring to, it is in the Motif XS listening room: www.motifator.com/motifxs/motifxs-listen.php. One of the joys I get working for Yamaha is creating song files for different products. This demo however is really special to me because of not only the quality of the voices involved, but the experience of actually playing them. I have to say that the expressiveness of the voices within the XS really makes creating music an absolutely rewarding experience. I created this tune based on the chord changes to the George and Ira Gershwin standard "Love Walked In", one of my all-time favorite compositions. The melody of the tune is completely different (just like the multitudes of original melodies within the jazz idiom that have been created over the chord changes of Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm"). This MP3 (which is encoded as a Variable Bit Rate (VBR), the best MP3 format when considering size vs. audio quality) was created from a file composed ENTIRELY within the Motif XS sequencer in song mode using only three tracks: Track one is an 8-element voice called "Nylon String Vel", an absolutely remarkable new nylon string guitar voice that is a perfect example of the new Xpanded Articulation feature that the Motif XS offers. Key off samples of the finger pulling of the fret board, occasional fret noise and upper velocity slides make this voice one of the most enjoyable voices to play in the Instrument IMHO. Track 2 is a voice called "Vintage JB AF 1&2", AF standing for "Assignable Function" which is how the harmonic is engaged at the top of the bass solo (see those two switches right next to the master volume slider in the XS picture). This one also features very cool key off samples which can be heard right after the harmonic sound occurs at the top of the bass solo. The realism and expressiveness of this voice is almost spooky! Track 3 features the "Brush Kit", one of my absolute favorite kits in the XS. The brush toms and ride cymbals are really great. The reverb used is the Rev-X hall and I used the VCM Compressor 376 on the entire mix, which really added a great deal of punch to the mix (maybe too much...the work is never done, is it?). I then recorded a two track file into Cubase 4 and encoded it in as a VBR mp3 in Wavelab. No other processing was used, so what you are hearing is all Motif XS with nothing else. A quick word about Variable Bit Rate MP3s: If you are listening to this in iTunes you will notice that the time doesn't line up. For some reason a VBR mp3 vexes itunes. I have some songs in iTunes that are about 4 minutes long but the program lists them as 23 minutes long...not sure exactly why that is, but the size is generally about the same as a 192 kbps MP3. I'll have to contact my buddies at Apple at ask them why that is. Either way, I'm a big fan of VBR MP3. Just in case you didn't know: Most MP3s are encoded at a Constant Bit Rate. The user picks a rate like 128, 192, 320 kbps, etc., and the file is encoded at this fixed rate. The encoding process used in Variable Bit Rate encoding makes intelligent bit-allocation decisions: In passages where there is more data (i.e. louder passages with lots of frequencies) additional bits are allocated to insure better audio quality; places with less data (like really quiet parts or dead silence) the bit allocation drops. The end result is a higher quality of MP3 than a constant bit rate. Anyway, enjoy the song. I certainly enjoyed creating it. tretinoinSubmitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2007-12-01 15:32.

Need help on a keyboardSubmitted by Marshal on Tue, 2007-03-06 04:58.
Hey Blake, long time since I talked to you. This is your old college room mate. I am actually in the market for a keyboard for my band so thought I would go right to the expert. I need something that will allow me to cover anything live (SRV, Pink Floyd, whatever). Any recommendations? » reply

Articulation with pitch bend?Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2007-02-05 20:49.
Blake, first, a very nice piece. At 1:32 there's a break with a bass harmonic that I assume is an articulation you triggered. But it also bends a little (nice) and I'm wondering if you have three hands or the bend and harmonic were part of one articulation. Whatever the method, it's a real nice, subtle effect. Or did you call the wife in and say, Honey, wiggle the pitch for me, okay? ;-) Dyno » reply
AF ControlSubmitted by Blake Angelos on Thu, 2007-02-08 03:33.
That harmonic was done by hitting the AF1 control which engages that harmonic sound (it is one of the elements on the bass), then I move down and use the pitchbend wheel, then move back up and hit the AF1 control to turn it off. It is in latch mode (hit once for on, again for off) on this voice but can easily be changed to momentary, but for this voice the latch mode works well. Once you get the process down it is pretty simple to do. I'm working on getting the wife to help out... Blake Angelos » reply
Awesome qualitySubmitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2007-01-28 19:01.
Its not my kind of music, but I definitely love the quality of the instruments and effects. It sounds so full and rich (unlike the ES) and still natural (like the ES). Yamaha has once again upped the ante when it comes to pro synths. Korg M3 is fairly good (based on demos) but it still sounds like a Triton in many ways. Time for Roland to catch up with Yamaha on their next workstation Fantom-Y or Fantom-Z or Fantom -EX or whatever. billrock » reply
Nylon String VelSubmitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2007-01-27 09:02.
Great song to listen to. The bass is excellent. You mentioned fret occasional noises in the "Nylon String Vel" - is it me, or are they not in your song? Also, could you elaborate on the "occasional" word - is it velocity controlled or random? As for the VBR, there are several variations of the format. The one you used for instance is not properly read by WinAMP - the song length is at first 5:36, then over time it falls to 3:05. This is due to the fact that VBR files contain information about the average bitrate (depending on encoder of course; some will just put "160" in VBR files) To solve this some encoders also put actual track length in the file header - some don't. » reply

First off: The fret noises are not random, they are velocity controlled (they only happen at 100). I they happen once in the song, but the only way to really hear them is to mute all the other tracks because the get lost in the mix. There will be a solo track that will be added in the future of the same guitar sound and you'll hear it there. In iTunes, the information says "128 kpbs"-- it is taking an average bit rate. Either way, I'll take better sound over accurate length, although it would be nice to have it all. Thanks for the comment! Blake » reply
One last thing about the fret noise sound....Submitted by Blake Angelos on Sat, 2007-01-27 17:35.
I forgot to mention one last thing about the fret noise that I think you'll want to know: There is a parameter under voice edit called "XA control", which allows you to designate the way an element is controlled (such as with the AF1/AF2 buttons, legato for solo instruments, etc.). The fret noise is designated as a key off sound. It engages at a velocity of 100 only and only after key off. I thought this a small but important detail. I'll post something later that shows how this works. Man, I love to play that voice... Blake Angelos » reply
Thank you, Blake, forSubmitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2007-01-27 20:13.
Thank you, Blake, for explanations. This is good to hear - playability was my biggest concern, esp. when I saw Bert and Athan constantly hitting the AF1/2 buttons to get the slides - when I saw a Tyros 2 demo (the one where Michel Voncken plays "Super Articulation Concert Guitar") I was simply amazed that basically no extra interaction was required to get all those articulations in realtime - just lay hands on keyboard and play. By the way, can the XS automatically switch to monophonic mode while playing legato, like the T2 (this was clearly demonstrated on the sax patch - you can hit a chord, but when you play a trill it behaves like a mono instrument)? Or let's put it that way - suppose I have a polyphonic voice but I want different elements sound when I play staccato and different elements when I play legato - without resorting to any extra contollers like AF1/2 or FC? » reply
You should take this one to the forum...Submitted by Blake Angelos on Sat, 2007-01-27 23:53.
Hello: One thing about a fuller question like this: I would post things like this in the forum because everyone can see it and it may benefit others to see a response. So, to answer your question, no: The XS cannot automatically switch to legato like the T2 in real time and no, it won't switch to different elements when playing different articulations--those are velocity or AF/FS controlled things. These are one of the differences between the instruments. Now, personally I don't like voices switching between monophonic and polyphonic while playing--It always seems to behave exactly the way I don't want it to, and it is one reason why I'm not a very good Tyros 2 performer like some of the guys from Europe, who are amazing, or Mark Anderson, the Marketing Manager for PSR and Arranger Workstations at Yamaha US (who does and unforgettable rendition of "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire). There is a vibe to the T2 and a vibe to the XS; One is designed for doing the live, killing one man band thing with great styles of music (T2) the other is really designed for music production/creation, sequencing, ensemble and solo playing (XS). For example, the XS performance record feature is something that the Tyros really doesn't do: You can record a performance with chord recognition and completely edit the parts that you don't want. T2 isn't really set up for that. Again, the concept behind both instruments is different. With regard to your initial question, I certainly don't want to come off saying that automatic mono-to-poly playing isn't a cool feature; it just isn't my cup of tea. You CAN do that with the AF1/2 buttons on the XS, which to me is nicer simply because I sometimes feel out of control the other way. Again, subjective opinion here. I think it is just a difference in what feels comfortable as a player. Kind of like the difference between playing piano and playing B3 (and I'm not a great B3 player, either, but I certainly love guys who do it). Blake Angelos » reply
